Radio License Path

How This Tool Works

Answer who needs to talk, how far apart you are, whether the applicant is 18 or older, and whether you will take a 35-question test. The page names one path and still shows all four: FRS, GMRS, Technician, and General.

Fees and steps come from FCC and ARRL pages. Where a detail is not settled on those pages, the step tells you to check with the FCC instead of repeating a third-party claim.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the GMRS license a test?

No. It is a $35 FCC fee for 10 years. You must be 18 or older to hold it. Immediate family may use the stations. Say the call sign at the end of a transmission and every 15 minutes.

Can a child get a ham license?

Yes. Ham has no minimum age. The person who transmits needs their own license. ARRL VEC exam sessions cost $5 for anyone under 18 and $15 for everyone else. Other exam teams set their own fee. ARRL pays back the $35 FCC fee for first-time licensees under 18 who test with ARRL VEC.

Is there a payment deadline?

For ham licenses filed by an exam team, ARRL says to pay the $35 within 10 calendar days of the FCC's payment email, or the FCC dismisses the application. For GMRS, pay when the FCC asks during your online application. This page does not state a separate GMRS deadline. Check the FCC fee page for the current amount.
